Coffee table - Robert Mathieu, circa 1950
Rare design - tubular structure, integrated yellow magazine rack, trapezoidal glass top in glass
While Robert Mathieu is best known for his modernist lighting fixtures and ingenious articulated systems, this rare coffee table, produced in very small series in his Paris workshop in the early 1950s, bears witness to the same demand for precision and refinement.
The structure consists of a visually light, black-lacquered metal tubular, incorporating a perforated sheet-metal magazine rack, here in a striking original bright yellow. The trapezoidal glass top, cast on a sand bed, rests elegantly on the structure, held in place by fine gilded brass cabochons. This subtle contrast between industrial materials and precious details reflects the formal intelligence of post-war French design.
A piece as functional as it is sculptural, rare on the market and in exceptional original condition, ideal for 20th-century design enthusiasts in search of a singular piece.
