An iconic Coconut Lounge Chair designed by American designer George Nelson and produced by Vitra in 2004. Originally conceived in 1955, the chair is one of Nelson’s most recognizable designs, inspired by the shape of a coconut shell divided into sections and translated into a wonderfully sculptural seating form.
The sweeping black leather seat contrasts beautifully with the light-colored fiberglass-reinforced shell and delicate tubular steel base. Its wide, inviting form combines comfort with a remarkably light architectural appearance. Highly decorative and a true statement piece, the Coconut Chair remains a timeless example of mid-century modern design.
About the Designer
George Nelson (1908–1986) was one of the most influential figures in American modernist design. As an architect, writer and designer, he played an important role in shaping post-war American design. His work is celebrated for its intelligent construction, sculptural forms and ability to combine functionality with a distinctive sense of character.
