Decorative plate made of fine porcelain, from the series dedicated to the heroines of the classic Chinese novel "Dream of the Red Chamber" (红楼梦, Hong Lou Meng). The character depicted is Tanchun (探春), one of the Twelve Beauties of Jinling, a figure of strong will and intelligence in the work. The scene is carefully painted. Tanchun is seated in an aristocratic garden, dressed in a bright red robe and a pale blue scarf, holding a calligraphy scroll. In front of her, a scholar's table holds a black inkstone and brushes in a woven bamboo vase. A cobalt blue vase blooming with pink peonies stands to her right. In the background, a red and gold lattice window, wisteria branches, and a palm tree create an imperial garden of great graphic delicacy. A red seal in the bottom right corner signs the composition. The border is adorned with a frieze of blue sawtooth patterns on a white background, framed by two blue lines. The background of the plate is ivory white. On the reverse, an inscription in Chinese characters identifies the character and the work, the trademark "永" (Yong) crowned with laurels, and the mention "MADE IN CHINA / 中国制造". Diameter approximately 19 cm. Dream of the Red Chamber is one of the four great classic novels of Chinese literature, written in the 18th century by Cao Xueqin. This family and sentimental fresco, considered the absolute masterpiece of Chinese prose, features dozens of female characters of great psychological depth. The series of decorative plates illustrating its heroines were produced in China starting in the 1980s, intended for export and collectors. Each plate depicts a different character, identified on the reverse. To be hung on the wall, placed on a stand, in an Asian arts-oriented interior, a library, or a cabinet of curiosities.
