The water carrier roamed the streets of Paris until the end of the 19th century, his two tinplate buckets suspended from a wooden yoke, selling water drawn from public fountains by the glass or by the bucket. The Chauvigny factory, in the Vienne region, has immortalized this vanished figure on this white porcelain plate, with a precision and elegance characteristic of both an engraving and collectible faience. The finely printed polychrome decoration depicts the carrier in his period costume: wide-brimmed hat, yellow breeches, and green boots, against a background of Parisian cobblestones. The inscription «Métiers du Vieux Paris» (Trades of Old Paris) runs along the top of the medallion, and «Porteur d'Eau» (Water Carrier) at the bottom. The white of the porcelain is remarkably pure, and the reverse bears the red and black mark of the F.D. Chauvigny factory. Displayed on a stand or hung on the wall, this plate is as much a historical document as a decorative object. It belongs to a highly collectible series, with each trade constituting a distinct piece.
