Rare set of four original Tonneau chairs, designed by French designer Pierre Guariche for the Parisian company Steiner in 1954.
The first French chair made of molded plywood to be mass-produced, the Tonneau was a direct response to the challenges of the post-war era: creating modern, affordable, and mass-produced furniture. It is now considered an absolute icon of 20th-century French design, alongside the Amsterdam, Tulipe, and Vampire models by the same designer.
The molded plywood shell features a small window, while the base is made of bent steel tubing with a matte black lacquer finish. The natural wood is lightly stained, in keeping with the style of contemporary re-editions. All four chairs bear the Steiner stamp under the seat: a guarantee of authenticity and an essential criterion for collectors.
