The shape says it all even before one looks at the decoration. The albarello, this cylindrical vase with a flared neck and a distinct waist, is one of the oldest and noblest forms of Mediterranean ceramics. Born in the apothecaries of the Middle Ages, where it was used to store spices and medicines, it has over the centuries become an object of prestige, adopted by major Spanish and Italian workshops to transform it into a decorative vase of character. This one comes from the Guertes workshop in Seville, whose handwritten signature appears on the reverse. Seville is one of the great centers of Spanish artisanal ceramics, a direct heir to Moorish techniques and the long Hispano-Moorish tradition. Sevillian workshops have for centuries perpetuated a skill of hand-painting on faience, with that characteristic palette of cobalt blue, lavender blue, and gilded olive green highlights. The decoration abounds over the entire surface of the vase. Bellflower blossoms and sinuous foliage unfurl in continuous scrolls, hand-painted with a freedom and vitality that reveal the potter's hand. The olive highlights bring an unexpected warmth to the blue and white. Two molded side handles in the shape of mascarons frame the belly. Geometric friezes at the neck and base frame the whole with precision. The glaze is brilliant, the background white luminous. In a Mediterranean interior, an antique library, or on a stone fireplace, this vase immediately finds its place. It measures 28 cm in height with an interior diameter of 10 cm at the neck. Very good condition, brilliant glaze, intact decoration.
