Exceptional vintage LC4 Chaise longue by Cassina, one of the most famous and influential designs in modern furniture. The LC4 dates back to a 1928 design by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand and is now considered an icon of classical modernism. This particular piece also stands out due to its low production number, which is 1123. Its radically functional structure is directly oriented to the human body and different resting positions. Particularly characteristic is the separation between the supporting base and the curved reclining surface. The black lacquered, architecturally constructed base forms the foundation on which the chrome-plated tubular steel construction rests freely. The lounger can be brought into different inclination positions within the constructively provided range. The curved reclining surface consists of a chrome-plated tubular steel frame with numerous black elastic support straps. These form a flexible base for the overlying cushion and underline the technically sophisticated character of the design. Particularly striking in this example is the cushion made of dark pony skin. The natural fur creates an exciting contrast to the shiny chrome and the black lacquered base. Due to decades of use, the cushion now has a distinct patina: while the pony skin is still clearly preserved in various areas, it shows significant hair loss and abrasion, especially in the seat and leg areas, revealing the underlying leather skin in places. At the head end is the characteristic cylindrical headrest, which is attached to the structure with leather loops. Together with the ergonomically curved reclining surface, the unmistakable, almost weightless silhouette of the LC4 is created. The combination of chrome-plated tubular steel, black base and pony skin makes this version a particularly distinctive example of the design. Despite its generous dimensions, the construction appears light and transparent and possesses a remarkably modern presence almost a century after its original creation. Condition: Authentic vintage condition with clear signs of wear due to age and use. The pony skin cushion shows extensive hair loss, abrasion and a distinct patina, especially in the seat and leg areas. In places, the fur is completely worn away and the underlying leather surface is visible. Age-related wear is also present on edges and trims. The black elastic support straps are largely completely present. The chrome-plated tubular steel frame shows scratches, abrasion and typical age-related surface marks. The black lacquered base also shows signs of wear, minor paint loss and patina. The clearly aged condition of the pony skin cushion gives this example an authentic vintage character; alternatively, the cushion could be professionally restored or renewed if required.
