Soapstone, or lard stone, has been one of Chinese sculptors' preferred materials for centuries. Soft to the touch, easy to work with, it lends itself to remarkably fine reliefs while developing over time a deep patina with dark brown and black hues that impart a unique character to it. This piece perfectly illustrates this craftsmanship. A miniature rocky landscape, densely carved in high relief, where mischievous monkeys and birds with detailed feathers come to life around a central basin carved directly into the stone. The walls of the basin are adorned with incised floral motifs, demonstrating remarkable care in its execution. Several holes drilled into the rock held incense sticks, making this object a decorative incense holder in its own right, both functional and contemplative. The piece is dense and heavy despite its compact dimensions, a characteristic inherent to soapstone, which immediately reassures as to the material's quality. The natural dark brown and black veins fully participate in the composition, following the rocky reliefs as if nature itself had guided the sculptor's chisel. Of carved soapstone, of Chinese origin, dating from the 20th century, it measures approximately 25 cm in length. The aged patina is homogeneous, without notable flaws.
