Carved oak Virgin and Child statue German religious art 20th century
Celebrate your faith with this marvellous representation of the Virgin Mary and the Infant Jesus, carved in oak. German in origin, it dates from the second half of the 20th century.
It's a beautiful work of German religious folk craftsmanship: entirely hand-carved and varnished, it has a very expressive, maternal character, with more modern features than earlier German productions, which have a more 'Gothic', austere style, where the Virgin would wear a veil and a fuller garment, and the Infant Jesus would have less 'childlike', more 'rigid' facial features.
This more popular depiction draws its inspiration from the Alpine Baroque style, with its German-Austrian influences from the Alpine regions of Tyrol and neighboring Bavaria, where the oak wood was sourced.
Characteristic of this style is the emphasis on emotion through 'movement' in the dress, with a voluminous, slightly undulating and turned drape, like a mother cradling her young child with a dancing wiggle to calm him. Emotion can also be seen in the expressions on the faces, which are more open and smiling, establishing a warmer, more human grace, like that of a mother to her son. That's the beauty of this folk craft, a craft filled with realism and humanity.
Lovers of devotional objects and believers in search of a maternal representation, don't hesitate any longer! Adopt this superb representation of the Virgin Mary and the Infant Jesus without further ado.
