Product description
A striking and rare caricature candlestick, crafted from spelter with a dark bronze and gilt patina, depicting the actor Frédérick Lemaître in his role in "La Lune," a celebrated 19th-century actor known for his dramatic roles and expressive acting. The stooped posture, exaggerated face, and treatment of the drapery place this piece firmly within the tradition of late 19th-century theatrical and satirical representations. The figure, sculpted in the round, supports a candle holder, the whole resting on a circular base. It retains its beautiful original burnished patina with traces of gilding. The foundry mark "AB" is visible under the base and remains to be identified.
Height 26.8 cm, width and depth approximately 7 cm, base diameter 11 cm. Very good overall condition, with normal wear to the patina and some age-related signs of wear, including a small hole in the bottom of the candle holder. Approximately 1 kg.
