Seat and back upholstered in brown leather with a visible wooden frame. This version is very rare. Thonet recently reissued the S64 in this material combination – in other colors – in collaboration with Jil Sander. The new price is approximately €3,200.
Description
Marcel Breuer was a German-Hungarian architect and designer. He was one of the central figures in modern architecture and design in the 20th century. Marcel Breuer began his career in 1920 at the Bauhaus in Weimar, where he began an apprenticeship as a carpenter and was later appointed head of the furniture workshop. Inspired by the Dutch De Stijl movement and Soviet Constructivism, Breuer began constructing innovative furniture from tubular steel. Among his creations were the B32 cantilever chair and the radically avant-garde B3 (Wassily) club chair from 1925.
Forced by his Jewish heritage, Marcel Breuer left Germany after Hitler's rise to power in 1933. After working in Budapest and London, he emigrated to the USA in 1937. There, he founded the architecture department at Harvard University together with Walter Gropius. From 1946 onwards, Marcel Breuer worked exclusively as a freelance architect. In the following years, he created an impressive oeuvre of groundbreaking buildings. These include the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.
