RAAK C-1701 “COLLAGE” LAMP BY WILLEM VAN OYEN | 1970s
Studio Haag presents the rare and visually striking C-1701 “Collage” lamp, designed in the 1970s by acclaimed Dutch stained-glass artist Willem van Oyen for Raak Amsterdam. A sculptural and expressive piece, this lamp exemplifies the fusion of industrial design and handcrafted artistry, making it a true highlight of mid-century Dutch lighting.
The lamp features a perforated grey-lacquered (this variant: black) metal body, accented with inlays of richly colored, handmade glass and copper tubing. Each glass element is individually crafted, ensuring no two lamps are exactly alike. This version, with its black lacquered base, is even rarer than the standard silver-grey edition, increasing its desirability among collectors.
Born in 1921 in Amsterdam, Willem van Oyen was known for his monumental postwar stained-glass installations, often using techniques such as appliqué staining, sandblasting, opal grinding, and glass fusing. Initially working through his Bevo Glas Industrie studio for churches and public buildings, van Oyen later brought his vision to Raak, creating a series of remarkable lighting objects—“Collage” being the most iconic.
While originally conceived as a wall-mounted lamp, the “Collage” model functions beautifully as a table or shelf lamp, casting a warm, ambient light through its vivid glass inlays.
A standout piece of functional art, this lamp brings the soul of stained glass into the world of modern lighting—a timeless addition to any mid-century or contemporary interior.
