The Butterfly Chair, also known as the BKF, is one of the most iconic designs in 20th century design history. Its unmistakable silhouette immediately lends character and expression to any room without the need for additional furniture or accessories. With its floating lightness and sculptural presence, it has been considered a "throne of interior design" for decades.
The shape of the chair is inspired by the wings of a butterfly. A filigree steel frame supports a loose leather cover that gives way gently when seated and conveys a feeling of mobility and lightness - almost as if you were floating in a hammock. This subtle dynamism makes the chair one of the most comfortable yet minimalist pieces of seating furniture in Mid - Century design.
The model was designed in 1938 in Buenos Aires by Jorge Ferrari-Hardoy together with Antonio Bonet and Juan Kurchan. Just a few years later, Knoll International began licensed production in the USA and Europe and made a decisive contribution to the worldwide distribution of the design. The early, authentic versions from this period in particular, such as the example shown here with a black metal frame and thick black leather cover, have a high collector's value today. The perforated edges with leather straps lend the chair precision craftsmanship and emphasize the attractive contrast between industrial austerity and warm materiality.
