The mirror is made in the Federal or Regency style, which embraced Neoclassical decorative elements. The convex glass was functionally intended to diffuse the light from candles or lamps throughout the room and offered a broad overview, hence the nickname 'butler mirror'. The gilded (giftwood) frame often features thirteen small spheres around the inner rim, representing the original thirteen colonies. The prominent eagle at the top is a common patriotic symbol from that period.
