Sculptural bronze candlestick, Brutalist, 1950s/60s
Not just a candlestick that happens to look good – a small sculpture that holds a candle.
Cast in bronze, approx. 2.3 kg – the piece has a weight and presence that doesn't come across in photos. A solid casting rests on three curved legs that taper to a pointed pyramid; the body is crisscrossed with organic, teardrop- and kidney-shaped perforations. A wide, shallow drip tray sits atop.
The biomorphic design language is directly related to the sculpture of post-war modernism – Hepworth, Moore – translated into a functional object. The dark, warm patina with greenish traces in the indentations has developed naturally and remains uncleaned.
A piece that stands alone on a sideboard, a stack of books, or a windowsill. Backlit, the perforated structure becomes a striking feature.
