This dark brown carved wooden box with a hinged lid is entirely covered with a dense and rhythmic relief decoration: volutes, foliate scrolls, and interlocking geometric patterns, meticulously carved with a gouge, revealing quality craftsmanship. The corners are reinforced with gilded brass fittings that highlight the structure and give the piece the appearance of a small travel chest. The lid opens to a single compartment of raw, brown-stained wood, fitted with gilded brass hinges. A keyhole escutcheon is visible on the front. Length 20 cm, width 11 cm. Good overall condition, with a homogeneous wood patina. Handcrafted, originating from India or North Africa, first half of the 20th century. Placed on a desk, a shelf, or a console table, this box possesses the substance and presence of objects that have endured through time without seeking to merely please. Light plays in the hollows of the carved decoration with a particular depth.
