A superb solid bronze cabinet of curiosities statuette depicting a crouching ithyphallic satyr (or Priapus). Inspired by Roman antiquity, the figure sports a full beard and a small tail. He supports an enlarged phallus with his right hand, while his left hand rests on his knee.
Historically, this type of representation had an apotropaic function, intended to ward off the evil eye and promote fertility.
This is a very fine cast from the Grand Tour period (late 19th - early 20th century), probably made in the workshops of Naples, Italy. The piece is enhanced by a beautiful green patina imitating archaeological bronzes found in excavations.
