Bohemia Crystal “Thistle” Vase by Josef Švarc – Poděbrady / Bohemia Glassworks, Czechoslovakia, 1960s–70s
An exceptional example of Czech cut lead crystal, designed by Josef Švarc and executed within the Bohemian glassmaking tradition. This vase belongs to the celebrated “Thistle” pattern, distinguished by its deeply engraved botanical motif and masterful interplay of cutting techniques.
The composition combines deep cutting and fine engraving, creating a nuanced surface where bold, thorn-like stems contrast with delicately rendered thistle blossoms. The result is both sculptural and atmospheric—an object that captures light with remarkable intensity while retaining a refined naturalism.

About the Designer
Josef Švarc (b. 1928) was a highly regarded Czech glass artist, trained at the Fachschule für Glas in Kamenický Šenov between 1949–1952. He worked at Nový Bor and later at the Bohemia Glassworks in Světlá nad Sázavou, eventually becoming associated with the Josefodol workshop, where he also led the artistic department.
Švarc is described in the publication Czechoslovak Art Glass (1980) as “an excellent and sensitive engraver and cutter with a sense of detail.” His work is particularly noted for its refined botanical motifs and the sophisticated use of engraving depth—qualities clearly visible in this vase.
Design Notes
This piece exemplifies the individualistic approach of postwar Czech cut crystal, where traditional craftsmanship meets modern artistic sensibility. The thistle motif—rendered with both precision and expressive freedom—creates a dynamic visual rhythm across the surface.
The heavy lead crystal body enhances the optical effect, refracting light through sharply cut facets and finely etched lines. The vase reads simultaneously as decorative object and as a study in technique—balancing density, clarity, and luminosity.
A compelling piece for collectors of Bohemian crystal, mid-century European glass, or finely executed engraved work.
