"Blue Diamond": The Navy Blue Statement Piece with Soul, Delivered to Your Door.
Imagine a magnificent interior from around 1875: It was the heyday of the Gründerzeit – an era when furniture was built to last. This majestic sideboard, resting firmly and proudly on its characteristic lion's paw feet, was created approximately 150 years ago. We christened this splendid, one-of-a-kind piece "Blue Diamond."
When we discovered this piece, it was completely covered in a very dark, heavy brown. In our Second Life studio, we turned back the clock and, through countless hours of work, gave this historical treasure a new, luxurious lease on life.
The Metamorphosis: Craftsmanship & Passion
Bringing this piece into the modern age required an extremely large number of intricate steps:
The Design Statement: We reinterpreted the extremely heavy solid wood frame in a sophisticated, deep navy blue. The magnificent, three-dimensional fruit basket carvings on the doors, in particular, required the utmost craftsmanship to remove the old varnish and restore their lustrous shine with a new matte finish.
Oak veneer & finish: We expertly removed old, dark layers from the historic oak veneer tabletop, carefully sanded it, and sealed it with a high-quality, colorless lacquer. This preserves the vibrant natural grain and provides perfect protection for everyday use.
The hidden treasure: The absolute highlight is the integrated, extendable marble top. We meticulously polished the stone and removed age-related yellowing – a luxurious detail, perfect as an elegant surface for drinks or decorative items.
Authentic character: A real story
We love furniture that tells stories. Because we crafted every inch by hand, the traces of time that make this unique piece so special are also evident:
On the top, two subtle marks bear witness to the original assembly, and in two tiny spots, the core wood beneath the veneer is slightly visible – a sign of genuine craftsmanship. A deeper scratch in the marble, dating back decades, has been smoothed so that it is now perceptible as a charming part of its history, yet visually refined.
A touch of nostalgia: After 150 years, the original locks have become relics of their time, their original function now dormant. A single, historic key exists, used to open the side doors. The locks themselves no longer function – a fact that in no way diminishes their visual beauty as antique fittings and underscores the nostalgic charm of this unique piece.
Craftsmanship note: This sideboard features an exceptionally solid wood back panel and a heavy solid wood body. Because wood is a natural material that expands and contracts with changes in humidity, the chest of drawers will require precise, millimeter-accurate leveling of its feet at its new location (as is typical for genuine antiques) to ensure the solid doors and drawers retain their perfect lightness.
