With Mandela's death, a symbol of the struggle for emancipation has gone down in history. Or rather, he made a comeback.
Billy Gibula is an incredibly passionate and versatile painter from Kinshasa, whose passion for art blossomed at an early age. He has always been fascinated by the world of painting, dreaming of becoming an artist from the age of 11.
Like many talented Congolese painters, Billy is a member of the famous Kinshasa School of Painting. His path to becoming a painter was truly unique: he did not attend the Kinshasa Academy of Fine Arts, but devoted every spare moment to painting. One fateful day, he met Jean-Claude Lofenia Mpoo, a renowned Kinshasa painter, on the street, and Jean-Claude became his mentor. Keen to capture the spirit of Congolese cultural heritage, peace and love, Billy brilliantly brings his subjects to life in vibrant oil-on-canvas portraits. His unique origins create an enchanting atmosphere, transporting the viewer to the heart of the Congo. Billy is also an active member of the Kitokongo community, contributing greatly to its vitality and vibrancy. His dedication and passion play a crucial role in making this community a privileged space for artists and craftspeople.
