The Moment bench by Ruud-Jan Kokke, produced by Kembo in the 1990s, is a striking example of Dutch postmodern furniture design, where experimentation with form, material and ergonomics takes center stage. Kokke’s work is known for its sculptural clarity and architectural approach, and this bench embodies those principles with confidence.
Crafted from laminated birch plywood, the bench features a fluid, wave-like seat that contrasts elegantly with the upright, graphic backrests. The integrated back elements function both as visual anchors and as subtle ergonomic supports, giving the piece a strong sculptural presence while remaining functional.
The later-applied black finish adds a bold graphic layer to the design, emphasizing the contours and enhancing the contrast between structure and surface. As both seating object and spatial statement, Moment blurs the boundary between furniture and sculpture—an approach characteristic of Kokke’s oeuvre.
About the Designer
Ruud-Jan Kokke (b. 1958) is a Dutch designer renowned for his experimental furniture designs from the late 1980s and 1990s. Working primarily with plywood and innovative construction techniques, Kokke gained international recognition for his radical yet refined approach to form and function. His work is represented in museum collections and is regarded as an important contribution to Dutch postmodern design.
Condition
Very good condition, showing normal signs of use consistent with age. The black finish was applied at a later stage and is well integrated into the overall appearance.
