Ben Genaux (1911–1996, Belgium)
Landscape with Tower and Butterfly
Oil on panel, 78 × 94 cm
Simple handmade wooden frame (likely crafted by the artist himself)
This large and atmospheric painting by Belgian artist Ben Genaux captures a poetic fusion of nature, mysticism, and light. A lone, twisted tree dominates the foreground, its branches spreading like veins across a shimmering sky of green and gold. Beneath it, a delicate butterfly hovers — a fleeting symbol of transformation — while the silhouette of a tall tower rises in the misty distance, its spire piercing the luminous heavens.
Genaux’s swirling, almost calligraphic brushstrokes reveal his fascination with both natural forms and spiritual symbolism. The composition evokes a dreamlike vision — a landscape that is both real and imagined — rendered in deep greens, blues, and iridescent yellows that seem to glow from within.
The painting also reflects the subtle influence of the Belgian Surrealists, such as Paul Delvaux and René Magritte, whose poetic approach to light and space resonates in Genaux’s visionary landscapes. Yet his interpretation remains deeply personal — more lyrical than cerebral — guided by emotion and intuition.
The piece embodies Genaux’s mature style: a blend of symbolism, surrealism, and lyrical abstraction, where emotion and movement dissolve the boundary between the material and the mystical.

About the Artist
Ben Genaux (Oscar Genaux, 1911–1996) was a Belgian painter, draftsman, and illustrator associated with the artistic scene of Charleroi. Trained under Léon Van den Houten, he developed an individualistic visual language, moving from figurative realism toward surrealism and abstraction.
His work often explores landscapes, oriental themes, and poetic visions of nature, combining vibrant color harmonies with fine, rhythmic linework. Genaux exhibited at the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Charleroi and participated in numerous Belgian art salons throughout the mid-20th century.
Today, his paintings are appreciated for their expressive light, fluid forms, and spiritual undertones, blending the material world with the visionary — and carrying forward the introspective, dreamlike spirit of Belgian Surrealism.
