Beautiful large wool Smyrna artwork 'Annunciation' ('Announcement'), also known as the Message to Mary, by W. den Blaauwen (2003), based on a design by Johan Kollaard.
A unique piece!
As the sticker on the back explains, it is inspired by a quilt published in Quiltnieuws (2000), based on a design by Johan Kollaard for a church that was never built.
I was able to find and purchase this magazine to complete the set.
The textile artwork looks beautiful on a half-height cabinet or on the floor, and of course, also on the wall.
Technically, it has associations with a stained-glass window.
Thematically, it concerns Archangel Gabriel visiting Mary and announcing to her that God has chosen her to become the mother of His Son.
Spiritually, it speaks of a new, deepening phase of life to which you are inwardly invited.
In wonderful vintage condition; please examine the photos carefully. I have thoroughly re-stretched the work and fitted it with a new frame. I have incorporated the old frame on the back to preserve the original.
It can be enjoyed for years to come.
