Originally developed within the celebrated collaboration between the Bauhaus and Leipzig lighting manufacturer Körting & Mathiesen, known under the Kandem brand, the Model 0342 is associated with Bauhaus designers Marianne Brandt and Hin Bredendieck. This post-war example was produced in the 1950s by VEB Leuchtenbau Leipzig (LBL), successor to the historic Leipzig Kandem works. The lamp embodies the functional clarity and restrained geometry characteristic of Bauhaus lighting design. A sweeping chrome-plated metal arm connects the weighted circular base with the broad, adjustable shade, while the dark Bakelite elements provide a striking contrast to the polished metal. Every component is reduced to its purpose, resulting in an exceptionally balanced and sculptural desk lamp. This particular LBL version retains the historic 0342 model designation and represents the continuation of an important pre-war Bauhaus design into East German post-war production. The model is documented as Type 03 4.0 in the authoritative publication Bauhausleuchten? Kandemlicht! / Bauhaus Lighting? Kandem Light! and is illustrated on page 155. Dating from the 1950s, this example is preserved in an extraordinary, virtually museum-quality condition. The surfaces, Bakelite elements, metalwork and overall appearance show an exceptional degree of preservation that is highly unusual for a working lamp of this age. Only very discreet traces of use are present. Examples of this model surviving in such complete and remarkably well-preserved condition are exceedingly rare, making this lamp particularly attractive to collectors, museums and connoisseurs of historic Bauhaus lighting.
