This striking lounge chair was designed by Swedish designer Johan Bertil Häggström for IKEA in the 1970s and is an impressive example of the combination of Bauhaus-inspired design language with high seating comfort.
Its characteristic feature is the rounded frame made of chrome-plated tubular steel, which forms the armrests, side sections and base construction in a continuous line. The seat consists of a tightly stretched, black fabric covering which, thanks to its elastic suspension, supports the softly upholstered cushion and also acts as a load-bearing element.
The generously sized cushions are covered in smooth black leather and are characterized by their soft, slightly sloping armrests and the deep, inviting seat.
The removable upholstery elements rest loosely on the construction and follow the shape of the upholstery exactly, giving the furniture an airy, floating appearance. The combination of soft leather and cool steel is reminiscent of classic Bauhaus modernism, but is interpreted here in a more homely, casual way - typical of the progressive design experiments that IKEA realized in small series in the 1970s.
