Product description
For sale: large Basilico Big compote bowl, reference 132, designed by the master of postmodern design, Ettore Sottsass, for the Japanese manufacturer Marutomi, 1997. Signed and dated on the base. Co-founder of the Memphis Milano movement in 1981 and the most radical and influential figure in global postmodern design, Ettore Sottsass collaborated with Marutomi to produce a series of lacquered plastic objects of exceptional quality, combining the traditional Japanese craft of Urushi lacquer with the explosive, polychrome formal vocabulary characteristic of his approach. The Basilico Big is one of the most striking pieces: its simple and absolute architectural form, its boldly vibrant blue and green chromatic contrast, and its plastic material, presented as noble, make it a piece that is both popular and sophisticated, provocative and timeless. A rare piece on the collector's market today, produced in a limited series before Marutomi closed. Very good overall condition, with only minor signs of wear consistent with its age.
