Constant Nieuwenhuys designed this wall shelf for Asmeta (Assendelft Metalware Factory) in the 1950s.
The shelf shows signs of wear but is still in good condition overall.

Constant Nieuwenhuys, often simply called Constant, was a Dutch artist and one of the founders of the COBRA movement. From 1949 to 1951, he worked as a designer for the Assendelft Metalware Factory. During his time at Asmeta, Constant was involved in the design of metal furniture and other industrial objects. His experience in the world of industrial design would later influence his artistic vision.
COBRA was an avant-garde art movement active from 1948 to 1951. The name "COBRA" is an acronym representing the cities where the founding artists came from: Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam. The movement strived for spontaneous and expressive art, and the artists wanted to break with existing traditions. Constant Nieuwenhuys played a crucial role in COBRA and contributed to its development through his participation in manifestos and exhibitions.
After the COBRA period, Constant's work evolved towards his concept of "New Babylon." This was an artistic and theoretical exploration of a utopian future urban society characterized by dynamism, change, and creativity.
All in all, Constant Nieuwenhuys played an important role in both the world of industrial design and the avant-garde art movement COBRA.
