Distinctive and full of character, this antique gilded metal ashtray takes the iconic shape of the curved-toe oriental babouche, in a particularly expressive decorative interpretation. The entire surface is adorned with rich relief decoration. Foliate scrolls, volutes, and stylized motifs cover the shoe up to its curled end. Polychrome highlights in red, blue, and green, still visible in the recesses of the decoration, contrast with the warm tones of the metal and delicately accentuate the relief work. The intentionally substantial casting gives the object a pleasing heft in the hand. The underside, left rougher, allows one to appreciate its molded construction, while the natural wear of the surface and polychromy fully contributes to its antique charm. Originally designed as a table ashtray, with a groove for resting a cigarette, today it can be repurposed as a small catch-all, incense holder, or simply kept as a decorative curio. A lovely vintage piece inspired by the Ottoman world, to be placed on a coffee table, a desk, or among a collection of travel objects. Dimensions. Approximately 14 cm in length. Turkey, 20th century.
