Distinctive and full of character, this antique gilded metal ashtray takes on the iconic shape of the pointed, upturned oriental babouche, in a particularly expressive decorative interpretation. The surface is entirely adorned with rich embossed decoration. Foliate scrolls, volutes, and stylized motifs cover the slipper up to its coiled end. Polychrome highlights of red, blue, and green, still present in the recesses of the decoration, contrast with the warm tones of the metal and delicately highlight the relief work. The deliberately substantial casting gives the object a pleasant presence in the hand. The rougher underside allows one to appreciate its molded construction, while the natural wear of the surface and polychromy fully contributes to its antique charm. Originally designed as a table ashtray, with a slot for resting a cigarette, it can today be repurposed as a small trinket dish, an incense holder, or simply kept as a decorative curio. A lovely vintage piece inspired by the Ottoman world, to be placed on a coffee table, a desk, or among a collection of travel objects. Dimensions: Approximately 14 cm in length. Turkey, 20th century.
