Name: Ignace Maes
Art form: Painting
There is no clear perceptibility in my work, no reflection of any reality. It is rather a story with "still missing parts." They are compositions of intrinsic thoughts and memories. It is an unraveling of poles and contradictions.
The color palette is monochromatic, introverted. There is no fixed idea preceding the work. It is a spontaneously constructed, improvisational story where forms and matter remain subject to the attitude of the moment. Letting go and yet controlled and measured placement. Fields of tension of restlessness and tranquility alternate in often asymmetrical compositions. Shadowy and sharp forms or figures play a game of withdrawn or striking presence.
Notwithstanding the abstraction, the human figure continues to play a role in my work. Sometimes he is strongly pronounced, at other times vaguely present in a quasi-quiet relationship with himself. Man stripped of his frills and surroundings, universal and timeless. The dual personality, or the eternal struggle between feeling and reason?
I want to keep the way open for the spectator to fill in his story, to interpret it. The vague, the abstraction in the work gives us a chance to dream away with it or flee from the coldness of reality and enter the twilight zone of our existence.
