Rare Antique Orientalist Table Lighter, ca. 1900
– Argentor Vienna, – Cold-Painted Metal
Beautiful and extremely rare mechanical friction lighter (Streichfeuerzeug) in Orientalist style, manufactured around 1900 by the renowned Austrian foundry Argentor-Werke (Rust & Hetzel) in Vienna.
The object depicts a highly detailed, richly dressed Oriental man with a turban and a long cloak, standing next to a decorated petrol column.
The sculpture is executed in high-quality cold-painted white metal (zamak/antimonite), a technique that was very popular in Vienna at the time to emulate the style of Franz Bergmann.
This example is in remarkably complete, original condition. It is highly exceptional that the original, removable lighter pin (striker wand) is still present after more than 120 years; this is missing from most examples on the market. The original reddish-brown leather protection is located on the underside, and the authentic rectangular Argentor Vienna foundry mark is stamped onto the base plate.
The original painting displays a beautiful, age-appropriate patina with slight wear on the edges, which enhances its authenticity.
