Art Deco vase in multicolored ceramic with flowers, made by F.A.C.I. of Civita Castellana in the 1940s, Ø 18 cm h 30 cm. F.A.C.I. (Fabbrica Artistica Ceramiche Italiane - Artistic Italian Ceramic Factory) was one of the most important historical manufacturers in the Lazio ceramic district, active in Civita Castellana (Viterbo) from 1926 to 1967. F.A.C.I.'s production falls into a proto-industrial dimension, exquisitely Art Deco and Futurist, linked to the nearby Roman school. The factory was founded in 1926 by ceramist Carlo Guerrieri and entrepreneur Adolfo Brunelli. Shortly after its founding, the "Volpato" company provided larger premises and kilns in Via Ferretti in Civita Castellana, transforming F.A.C.I. into a Società Anonima (public limited company). The manufacturer immediately achieved enormous commercial success, regularly exhibiting at the Milan Trade Fair (from 1927 onwards) and even at the Leipzig Exhibition in 1930. F.A.C.I.'s production is famous for having combined artisanal craftsmanship (hand-turning) with modern and serial decorative techniques: the distinctive feature of the manufacture (especially in the 1930s) is the use of the airbrush combined with stencils. This technique allowed for the creation of velvety gradations, geometric color fields, and very "modern" graphics. Under the guidance of Carlo Guerrieri, F.A.C.I. produced a series of avant-garde vases with decorations of seaplanes, speedboats, chimneys, and dynamic geometries in full Futurist style, which are highly sought after today in design auctions. In addition to utilitarian objects (the 1950s tea and coffee sets are wonderful), the factory produced large vases decorated with relief figures, putti, floral motifs, or scenes with animals scratched onto the surface. During the Second World War, the factory suffered heavy bombing that almost completely destroyed the historic kilns, machinery, and much of the warehouses. This event makes pieces from the golden age ( ) extremely rare on the market. After the war, the factory was rebuilt, reorienting towards a style closer to the taste of the 1950s and 1960s (rough surfaces, polychrome glazes, and pure gold details), until its definitive closure in 1967.
