Art Deco Pique-Fleurs by Faïencerie de Thulin, Belgium A charming and highly decorative Art Deco ceramic pique-fleurs produced by the Belgian Faïencerie de Thulin. Its unusual sculptural construction features three separate tubular openings rising from a horizontal body on four small supports, creating an almost architectural, avant-garde silhouette. The piece is particularly striking for its rich flowing glaze, combining intense cobalt and ultramarine blue with soft grey-green and creamy tones, punctuated by warm ochre and amber accents. The natural variations and drips of the glaze make the surface especially lively and give each angle of the object a different appearance. The model is documented in the reference book devoted to the production of S.A. des Faïenceries de Thulin, where it is illustrated as model 1927, “Pique-fleurs.” The piece is also marked on the underside, further supporting its attribution. Originally designed for arranging individual flower stems, today it works equally well as a small sculptural ceramic object in a contemporary interior. This celebrated establishment was born out of the vision of industrialist Victor Ducobu-Decaudin, who transformed a former sugar refinery into a thriving pottery factory. With cutting-edge facilities for its time—including three coal-fired kilns and a steam engine—the factory set a new standard in craftsmanship and production. After Victor Ducobu’s passing in 1897, his entrepreneurial legacy continued through his children. Renamed Faïencerie de Thulin-A. Ducobu et Cie, the factory was expertly managed by Arthur Ducobu until 1918, and later by his sister, Victoria Legay-Ducobu. Under Victoria’s leadership, the company transitioned into a public limited company in 1920, cementing its place as a major player in the ceramics industry. In 1923, the company evolved into the Société Anonyme des Faïenceries de Thulin, with an initial capital of 450,000 francs, which grew to 600,000 francs by 1924. The factory flourished between the World Wars, employing 70 to 100 skilled artisans who crafted exquisite pottery for both domestic and international markets, including Paris, where distribution was handled by the renowned Eugène Val Faubourg Saint Martin.
