Powder pink, lilac, violet, milky white… this candy box seems to have captured the colours of a twilight sky. The opaline is streaked with irregular marbling that blends into each other, making each part unique. Some areas are almost white, while others are tinged with mauve and pink, taking on hues close to amethyst. Upon opening, the decoration continues inside in large, particularly beautiful coloured scrolls. Its design takes us directly to the Art Deco era. The lid abandons the gentle curves of previous decades in favour of a highly architectural composition. Lines radiate from the center, breaking to form points and raised patterns. Between them appear small clusters of fruit molded into the opaline. Nature is still present, but it has adapted to the taste of the 1930s: ordered, stylized, geometric. The body complements it with a succession of oblique facets that add rhythm to the piece and create multiple plays of light. It is also the story of an era when French glassmaking experienced tremendous creativity. Household objects became bolder, colours asserted themselves, and molded glass made it possible to create raised patterns previously reserved for much more expensive productions. The major glassworks of Eastern France played a full part in this evolution. This candy box, with its marbled opaline and decorative vocabulary, is in the style of Portieux-Vallérysthal productions from the inter-war period. However, it bears no mark that would allow it to be definitively attributed to this manufacturer. With its approximately 12 cm in diameter, it belongs to those small boxes found in the intimacy of a home: sweets, jewelry, powder, pins, or small souvenirs could be stored there. Today, it needs nothing. Placed on a chest of drawers, a dressing table, or a console table, its colour speaks for itself. And when the light meets its facets, the pink and violet regain their vibrancy. A small piece of the 1930s, all in opaline, texture, and colour.
