Art Deco French Liqueur Set, 1930s
Elegant French Art Deco liqueur set, dating to the 1930s, produced by the historic glassworks of Arques, France (known at the time as Verrerie et Cristallerie d’Arques, under the management of G. Durand & Cie).
The set includes:
• 1 serving tray
• 1 decanter with stopper
• 6 liqueur glasses
All pieces are made of pressed pink “rosaline” glass, a refined and highly characteristic material of the Art Deco period. The design combines strong geometric lines with subtle textural detailing, reflecting the transition from traditional craftsmanship to early industrial modernity.
The liqueur glasses are marked “Made in France”, a detail typical for export-oriented French glassware of the interwar period and a valuable confirmation of origin.
With its soft rose tone, sculptural forms, and architectural symmetry, this set is a fine example of 1930s French decorative glass, equally suited for display, collection, or refined use.
An authentic and evocative object from the golden age of European Art Deco glassmaking.
Historical Background
The glassworks located in Arques, northern France, was founded in 1825 and is one of the oldest continuously operating industrial glass factories in Europe. During the 1930s–1940s, the factory was officially known as Verrerie et Cristallerie d’Arques and was often identified in commercial and archival documents under the management name G. Durand & Cie, after the Durand family who ran the company at that time.
In this pre-branding period, production focused on pressed and blown glass for everyday tableware, decorative objects, and professional use. Many items from the 1930s were produced without brand marks, which makes historical context especially important for identification today.
After World War II, the factory became a pioneer of industrial glassmaking. It introduced modern automated and tempered-glass technologies and later launched several internationally known brands:
• Luminarc (late 1940s–1950s) for household glassware
• Arcoroc (1958) for durable professional tableware
• Cristal d’Arques (1968) for pressed crystal glass
Today, the historic Arques glassworks operates under the name Arc International, but its roots trace directly back to the same factory active in the 1930s.
Objects produced during this earlier period represent an important stage in the transition from traditional European glassmaking to modern industrial production.
