Armando, born as Herman Dirk van Dodeweerd (Amsterdam, 18 September 1929), is a Dutch painter, sculptor, poet, writer, violinist, actor, journalist, film, television, and theater maker. Armando is his official name; his birth name, the pseudonym as he calls it, no longer exists for him. Later, he had his original name replaced by Armando in the civil registry, a corruption of Herman that he owes to his Italian grandmother. Meanings such as "arming oneself," as literary analysts see in his name, are therefore coincidental. He views his work as a "Gesamtkunstwerk," for which his experiences during the Second World War in the vicinity of Camp Amersfoort form the basis. The artist was born in Amsterdam but spent his childhood in Amersfoort.
