This chair is the Argyle model, designed in 1897 by Charles Rennie Mackintosh for the tearoom on Argyle Street in Glasgow. It is a later version from Cassina's "I Maestri" collection, produced in 1973 and no longer in production.
The chair is made of ebonized ash and features a tall, sculptural backrest with a characteristic oval finial, which Mackintosh considered a design and symbolic feature.
The backrest is constructed of vertical panels and slender rods, creating a striking, graphic silhouette. The seat is upholstered in the original blue-black Crine fabric (horsehair).
The construction is meticulously crafted, with cross braces beneath the seat and a gently curved lower edge at the front and back, which softens the geometric design.
The chair bears the original Cassina branding with serial number 803 and the designer's signature.
The proportions and forms are based on original designs and measurements from the Mackintosh collection at the University of Glasgow.
Originally designed for the central tearoom tables of the Argyle Street Tearoom, this chair is Mackintosh's first piece of seating furniture to incorporate the signature upper backrest motif as an iconic design element.
Condition: Very good, well-maintained original condition with minimal signs of age-related wear. The ebonized finish is evenly preserved, the seat cushion is firm, and the upholstery is clean.
