Arcopal is a French brand, born in the 1950s within the Arc International group, in Arques in the Pas-de-Calais region. A town, a factory, a glassmaking expertise passed down from generation to generation since the 17th century. The opal glass that Arcopal popularized is not just simple whitened glass. It is an opacified borosilicate glass, obtained by adding opacifying agents melted at very high temperatures. The result is a dense material, resistant to thermal shock, which goes from the refrigerator to the oven without complaint. An industrial feat disguised as an everyday object. These two casseroles are part of the iconic collections distributed in France in the 1970s and 1980s. The fine and discreet floral decoration runs around the edge with a lightness that contrasts with the material's solidity. Stylized roses, small wildflowers, foliage. A heat-screen-printed pattern, set into the material, which does not fade with time or washing. The set brings together two matching casseroles. The larger one, with its original lid. The second, without a lid, in the same state of preservation. Two pieces from the same set, with the same design, with the same spirit. They go from oven to table effortlessly. It's their nature. They are not meant to be looked at. They are meant to be used. Very good condition. Beautiful shine of the opal glass. No notable alteration, no chips, no cracks. The decorations are crisp and well-preserved. We knew these casseroles as children. On Mom's stove, on Sunday mornings. The steam escaping from the lid. The smell of gratin, soup, rice pudding. We didn't know yet that these objects would disappear. We didn't know that we would look for them one day. Here they are.
