Archimede Seguso (Vetraria Archimede Seguso) – Duo of “Fili” Ribbon Vases
Murano Glass, ca. 1950s–60s – Signed
A rare and exquisitely balanced duo of hand-blown Murano vases by Archimede Seguso (1909–1999), one of the great masters of 20th-century Venetian glass. Both pieces exemplify the famous “fili applicati” (applied filigree threads) technique that Seguso elevated to an art form — a meeting of sculptural rhythm, technical mastery, and poetic restraint.
These two vases, produced by Vetraria Archimede Seguso in the mid-century decades, demonstrate the house’s signature combination of transparency and linear tension: clear, luminous Murano glass encased in confident trails of molten colour, stretched into vertical ribs that both shape and animate the silhouette.
Design & Craftsmanship
Each vase is conceived as a cage of lines:
Vase 1 – Black Filigree (21.5 cm)
Clear Murano glass encircled by deep black applied threads, so saturated they appear almost metallic in contrast to the transparent body.
The rounded, lantern-like form is crowned by a delicately thickened rim, also worked in black glass.
Every rib catches the light differently, creating a kinetic play of shadow, reflection, and negative space.
Vase 2 – Red Filigree (22.5 cm)
A slightly taller, more flared form in clear glass with ruby-red applied threads, stretched vertically to emphasise the elegant, tulip-like contour.
The profile is organic yet architectural — a mid-century Venetian expression of modernity, sensuality, and precision.
Both pieces feature:
Hot-applied glass filaments (“fili”)
Ground pontil (abriss) typical of Murano production
Signature in vibro-engraving: Archimede Seguso Murano
Beautifully preserved surfaces with minimal age-consistent traces.
Artistic Context
Archimede Seguso stands among the most celebrated innovators of Murano glass, known for:
Mastery of filigrana, sommerso, reticello, and sculptural furnace techniques
Collaborations with leading Venetian furnaces
A personal style defined by clarity, rhythm, and dramatic restraint
The 1950s–60s were a particularly fertile period: Seguso refined his linear vocabulary and experimented with sculptural volume through controlled colour trails — a technique highly prized by collectors today.
These two vases belong to this lineage: modernist, expressive, and unmistakably Venetian.
