Karelia is made of beige/off-white stoneware in the M-shape by Arabia, also known from series such as Pirtti, Pilvi and Saara. The stoneware is decorated with a band of iron oxide. The result varies slightly from piece to piece, so each item is unique.
The Arabia Karelia dinnerware series (a historical region in Eastern Finland) was a hit during the trend of Finnish rural romanticism and artisanal cottage-style ceramics, popular in the 70s and 80s.
This thick stoneware earthenware with a light-colored background and a rustic motif became a popular table decoration in cafes and restaurants.
