A rare antique faience wall plate in Rococo style made by the famous 19th-century French ceramist Édouard Gilles. A unique work sought after by collectors. Édouard Gilles (active in Paris in the late 19th century) frequently produced decorative plates and vases in the Neo-Rococo or Napoleon II style featuring portraits of famous historical French figures from the Ancien Régime. Next to the lady in this work, a family coat of arms is depicted, including three geese or ducks (Merlets). I am still trying to trace the origin of this coat of arms. Photo 15 shows a previously restored break. Additionally, the medallion is missing a shard, which extends into a crack. This does not detract from the quality of the approximately 150-year-old wall plate! With this specific form of decoration, the artist painted directly onto the unfired or semi-dried clay using liquid clay colored with metal oxides (barbotine or slip). After the application of the colored slip layers, the object was covered with a transparent lead glaze and fired. This gives the intense, glossy colors and the characteristic, lively depth effect in the pink background and the blue of the dress. The soft green color is finished with a gilded rim showing wear. Graceful tendrils with flowers are painted in the same gilded paint. The 3-dimensional Barbotine flowers are in perfect condition. The plate is marked and signed and measures 36 x 26 x 6.6 cm (14.17 × 10.23 x 2.55 inches).
