A delightful little purse box from the 1930s-1940s, both elegant and precious due to the care taken in its decoration. Oval in shape, it is topped with a beautiful polished banded agate plaque, whose natural shades succeed one another in irregular bands, from cream to honey, then from brown to almost black-grey. The stone possesses that particular depth characteristic of agate, each layer slowly telling of its formation and making its design an absolutely unique composition. The contrast with the silver-plated metal is particularly successful. The finely worked rim frames the stone like a small jewel, while the reverse side reveals an elegant engraved decoration of flowers, foliage, and stylized volutes, characteristic of the decorative taste of the interwar period. This type of small box belonged to the world of feminine accessories that women carried with them. Its compact size allowed it to slip into a handbag to hold a few pills or lozenges, pins, a small piece of jewelry, or those small personal items one wished to keep safe. Inside, its original light-colored lining remains, as well as a small handwritten label under the lid, a discreet trace of its history.
