Beautiful, stately Mechelen neck mirror in Dutch Renaissance style, also known as a castle or mantel mirror. A true statement piece from the period around 1890. The mirror is made entirely of solid, dark oak with rich and deeply hand-carved details not seen in later reproductions: • Heavy, architectural cornice (11 cm deep) with egg-and-dart molding • Frieze with fish scale motif • Two lion heads with original brass rings in the mouths • Stands decorated with grotesque maskers / caryatids. The original faceted glass is clear and provides beautiful light refraction. Light, charming patina with minimal black specks befitting a mirror of this age; no significant opacity. The back, with its wide old planks, confirms its age. The mirror can be hung (only on a stone wall due to weight) or placed freestanding on the floor, as is currently very trendy as a full-length mirror.
