Lighter made by a French soldier during the trench warfare of World War I (1914-1918).
Using a 26mm diameter bullet, the soldier transformed it into a lighter with a lid onto which a 2-centime Dupuis coin (minted between 1898 and 1920) was set.
This coin is not entirely complete, but it is in good condition.
To momentarily forget the horrors of war and endure the miserable life in the trenches, the soldiers entertained themselves by keeping their hands busy. A whole range of trench art thus emerged from 1915 onwards, initially utilitarian and then increasingly decorative.
