Antique French Empire community chest, dating from the early 19th century. A rare French chest used for the community. Such chests were often used within communities, churches, or guilds for collecting donations or safely storing important documents and funds. It was customary in communities to distribute keys among the various members to safeguard the integrity of each member.
Complete with both keys and working locks.
