Figurative candlestick from the Historicist period, likely France or Austria, circa 1870–1900 – turn of the century, Belle Époque, transitioning to Art Nouveau.
The socket is crafted as an open flower calyx, the stem as a naturalistic stalk with leaves. Two finely sculpted sparrows enliven the piece – one on the stem, one in the nest-like base with a wreath of leaves and blossoms.
Cast zinc (Régule). Base with original brass screw.
Height approx. 17 cm, base approx. 10 cm, 513 g.
Condition: Unrestored original condition with a mature patina. The surface is rough and grainy due to age (typical oxidation of historic cast zinc). There is a small chip/hole in the flower calyx (see photos, barely visible from the front). The stem is slightly inclined, so a candle will sit at a slight angle – in keeping with the character of a naturally grown stem. Primarily a decorative collector's item and eye-catcher for period homes, display cabinets, or dressers. Stable and secure.
Private sale, no warranty or returns. Carefully padded shipping from Vienna.
