In family linen cupboards, fine household linen once told a story much deeper than mere housekeeping. It accompanied generations, was part of the trousseau, and preserved, sometimes for nearly a century, the silent memory of the tables around which a family had gathered. This embroidered "Monsieur" napkin slip belongs to this intimate history of the early 20th century. Crafted from an antique métis fabric (a blend of linen and cotton), it features that subtly textured material readily found in quality household linen. Métis fabric was particularly prized at the time. The strength of linen met the softness of cotton to create a textile destined to long accompany the life of the home. All the elegance of the piece is concentrated in its flap. Delicate white-on-white embroidered floral branches run across the light fabric. They encircle a small, finely crafted openwork medallion, while a scalloped border completes the design. Then, almost like a signature, the word "Monsieur" appears in cursive script. This single word takes us back to a practice that has now disappeared. Napkins used to be kept between meals. Each person would find their own, carefully folded in a textile envelope that allowed it to be identified. In homes where special attention was paid to linen, these napkin slips were embroidered, monogrammed, or, as here, reserved for Monsieur or Madame. Dating from the first third of the 20th century, circa . Dimensions: approximately 29 cm in length by 12 cm in width. A few traces of time and some loose threads at one end serve as a reminder of its age.
