Product description
In family linen cupboards, fine household linen once told a story that went far beyond mere domestic management. It accompanied generations, formed part of a trousseau, and sometimes for nearly a century, preserved the silent memory of the tables around which families had gathered. This embroidered "Monsieur" napkin holder belongs to this intimate history of the early 20th century. Crafted from an antique linen and cotton blend fabric, it features that lightly textured material readily found in quality household linen. This blend was particularly prized at the time. The strength of linen met the softness of cotton to create a textile intended to long endure in the home. All the elegance of the piece is concentrated in its flap. Delicate white-on-white embroidered floral branches unfurl across the light fabric. They surround a small, intricately worked openwork medallion, while a scalloped border completes the design. Then, almost like a signature, the word "Monsieur" appears in cursive script. This single word takes us back to a custom that has now disappeared. Table napkins were once kept between meals. Each person would retrieve their own, carefully folded in a fabric pouch that allowed for its identification. In homes where particular attention was paid to linen, these napkin holders were embroidered, monogrammed, or, as here, designated for "Monsieur" or "Madame." Dating from the first third of the 20th century, circa . Dimensions: approximately 29 cm in length by 12 cm in width. A few signs of age and a few loose threads at one end attest to its history.
