Two 19th-century devotional frames – folk art – antique engravings
A remarkable pair of old folk devotional wall objects, presumably produced in the second half of the 19th century (c. 1860–1900).
One image shows a bearded saint with a book and a bear, probably Saint Gallus, who is traditionally depicted with a bear. The young female saint on the second image could not yet be identified with certainty.
A remarkable historical detail is found on the reverse side. To enclose the frames, pages were reused from Antoine-François Prévost’s *Histoire générale des voyages, ou Nouvelle collection de toutes les relations de voyages par mer et par terre*, a voluminous French travel and historical work published by Didot in Paris starting in 1746. The pages used belong to the section on Hernán Cortés and the Spanish conquest of Mexico. Names such as Cortés, Vera Cruz, Zempoala, and Montezuma are still clearly legible, as is the remarkable marginal note “Cortez. Chap. X. An. 1519.”
This already old 18th-century printed matter was likely reused in the 19th century as available backing paper. In this way, these small objects combine 19th-century popular devotion with fragments from an 18th-century book about the conquest of Mexico in a unique manner.
