Fantastic antique dish c. 1900, very beautifully preserved. From the famous French earthenware factory Creil-Montereau. In the 19th century, they were known for their high-quality majolica (barbotine), including the iconic asparagus services. This dish is a classic example of the style popularized by this factory. Realistically designed ("trompe-l'oeil"), where the earthenware looks exactly like the vegetable it is meant to serve. Dated circa 1880. These Creil-Montereau asparagus pieces are highly prized by collectors. Condition: Because majolica is relatively soft earthenware, "chips" (minor damage) and hairline cracks in the glaze (craquelé) are common. However, the top of this dish has remained fantastically beautiful. Only the underside has one chip.
